So, it’s the New Year and I’m puppy hunting. That’s right, I’m looking for a dog. Not a cat, to which I have allergies, but a dog. A lovely, cute dog that I can cuddle, walk and play with. You think it’d be easy– but NO. Why? *looks towards the living room* There is someone else to consider who wants a BIG dog. Now, we live in an apartment. We can have up to a 30-40lb beast if we want. I want something smaller that can walk with me regularly and I won’t have to worry about the knick knacks becoming garbage fodder. He wants something substantial and not a frou frou dog as he puts it. Needless to say, we’ve been considering whether to go by breeder, shelter, rescue or more. We have a friend in Texas that does Malamute rescue work– and honestly, to me, rescued animals are the way to go- or those from the SPCA. It just makes sense to give to the community by helping a dog that’s been abandoned and needs the love that we can give. Though, I admit, there’s something so neat about a pure bred dog as well.

What I hadn’t realized until I started researching- 25% or more of the dogs in rescues and shelters are purebred. The other thing– black dogs are euthanized more often than any other color of dog. That alone just broke my heart because I adore black dogs. Because of the bad economy, shelters have had more dogs and less donations to help them out. So, if you’re out there and you can spare $5, give to your local SPCA or Humane Society. Seriously. That goes to help care, spay/neuter, train and more the animals that will someday find forever homes with people who will love them. If your SPCA is like mine, they also need volunteers or people to bring in blankets, rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, cleaning supplies and more. If you can donate anything- even dog toys or cat toys that you pick up on sale- do so. These things will make these creatures lives a little bit more pleasant while they wait.

That said, I’m still searching. Our friend has a husky that’s 18 months old that would fit the bill, but I worry on him being alone and the condition of the house since he’s not completely crate trained just yet. But the bonus- he’s been housebroken and trained to simple commands already, which makes me happy. We also saw a couple of dogs at the SPCA that just call to me- some that the male also likes, and some that are smaller than the male would prefer. In the end, it’s going to be a dog that both of us must love if it’s going to fit in our lives. The bad thing– I get the morning duty. Me- the non-morning person, volunteered for the morning pee run before work. *wails* But it’ll be interesting, to say the least. LOL

What kind of dogs do you like? What breeds interest you or should I consider? I want a smart dog that can be obedience trained, but one that also likes to curl up and be content to be cuddled occasionally. One that likes to go walking and occasionally go running and playing in a nearby field.
