I’ve finally decided it was time to start breaking my posts in paganism down the path I’m taking with putting together this idea for a book I’ve had. In some ways, the rougher versions will be here, allowing people to open up to many forms of learning. Today, however, I want to begin by discussing the elements.
Many people group the elements as 4 or 5 aspects. Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and sometimes Spirit. Depending on the belief system, you’ll see those listed. But many of us don’t really consider beyond the archetype aspects of the elements into a deeper look of what the element means to us and how to use it in our daily lives. Those who are pagan try to live a life of balance– not going one way over another if possible. We are caretakers of this world, the power within it, and of our lives. By learning more about the elements and how they can help us today, we’ll learn more about our own selves as well.
I begin with Earth because everyone knows what Earth is. It is the land we live on, it’s this planet we call home. But it’s more than that. Earth is the loam which is rich in nutrients, it’s the sand we sift through, it’s the grounding we feel when we’re safe in our beds.
For me, Earth is female in nature- a nurturing, protective element. It helps me to feel safe and grounded while working higher magick and at the same time, it keeps me from going too far. Some people feel Earth having male nature– and that’s the aspect about the elements to remember- they’re balanced and so they are both male and female.
One of the things I ask my students through the years is to list the positive and negative aspects of the elements. So, this is the first exercise I ask of you– What are the positive and negative aspects in an element. List them and explain what makes it positive or negative.
There is a reason for this list. Elements are balanced in ways we can’t understand. But more importantly, when there is real imbalance here on our planet, doesn’t it always seem that more natural disasters and other things related to the elements seem to be present? It’s nature’s way, the Elemental way of reinstituting balance on a higher scale. Scientists state a natural law, “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” This is true not just on the scientific scales, but also in the magickal realms as well.
Earth is protective. It provides food for us, protection from storms, it can bury us if we’re not careful, it can remove offending things in landslides, mudslides, or even earthquakes. So it’s protective not just for us, but also against us if we’re not careful and not in tune with what Earth wants from us.
Natural disasters happen because our planet is a living, breathing creature. Within it houses the four elements and when they are out of balance, things get a bit chaotic. But think of Earth for one moment. What would be her role in helping to balance out things? What good things has she done for you and for others? What could we have not done without her?
Magick Exercise Number 1:
Go outside and find a place where you can touch earth. Sit down, placing one hand upon the earth. As you breathe in and out slowly, allowing your mind to begin drifting in harmony with the universe, let Earth know that you want to work in balance with her. Tell her that you want to become closer and do things that will help keep that balance. Then listen for her response. It might take time for her to speak to you. You might get flashes of pictures, you might hear something in your mind, you might not hear anything. Keep doing this exercise every day to every other day until you hear a response. Make note of her response in a notebook, giving details. Then do as she asks of you.
Magick Exercise Number 2:
Take the time once a week to go outside and give to the Earth. Whether it’s picking up trash near a schoolyard, or even planting in your garden, do something to give to Earth. Give thanks to the food that you eat that comes from the land. Without that food, we wouldn’t be here. When you see the bees, ants, and other creatures that help pollinate our world, take a moment to thank them for serving Earth. Without them, we most certainly will not be upon this planet.
Remember Earth is not a jealous goddess, but an elemental power that is both positive and negative. She is a protector, a giver, and someone who commands respect. By becoming balanced within the element of Earth, we too become protectors and givers and will always find a way of harmony to balance our lives with that of caring for the most precious Earth given to us– our planet.
