I got caught up at the Liquid Silver Books blog yesterday during Torchwood fanfic day. So, I in my craziness…post a later part of the fanfic for everyone there. Hope you enjoy it too.
Phoenyx stood toe-to-toe with Owen. “You are one of the most annoying individuals, I’ve ever met, but Jack does seem to like you.”
“You say that to all the guys?” Owen sneered, but then grabbed her hand, pulling her so they were only a nose apart.
“No, only the dead ones who are still living somehow.” She kissed his cheek while sliding her hand down his cheek, then down the left arm to where his broken finger was. “You need to be careful, young man. Though dead, you’re able to be hurt. Let me help you.”
Before Owen could protest, Phoenyx kissed him soundly, concentrating on bypassing the energy that filled him, using her own psychic talents to knit together bone, tissue, and the soul. When she pulled back, Phoenyx wiped a tear from her left eye.”Be healed, healer.”
Owen grabbed her hand as she tried to walk away. “What have you done? I feel things again.”
Phoenyx nodded. “Yes. You do. Soon you’ll have a choice. One that only you can make. Well, you and Jack. Choose well.”
“Tell me.” Owen gazed deeply into her eyes. “I need to know, Phoenyx.”
1. “Why should I tell you,Owen?” Phoenyx asked softly, her thumb rubbing his hand, her energy intermingling with the energy that brought Owen life. “Choices come– those of life and death. If you had a choice to live again–would you take it?”
Owen stopped still and looked at her. She knew he was waying her words. Waying the hidden meanings. “I want to live.”
“You live now though you should not. You wish to grow old and die?” Phoenyx pushed at him hard, knowing that this moment would be the only time she’d be able to see Owen’s hidden soul.
“I want to eat, breathe, live, screw, and more. I’m dead in all things that make me human.” Owen bitterly spat out. “I’m only alive because of the energy that fills me.”
Phoenyx nodded. “And the energy I can bring you can give life, but in that, you will have death.”
“But you’re the true Phoenix, aren’t you?” Owen asked, stepping closer. “You always die only to be reborn.”
She said nothing. “Do you wish to live, Owen? Or would you continue as you are? Are you willing to pay the price to live again?”
1. She felt him before she turned. “And you, Captain Jack Harkness. Are you willing to pay the price to bring Owen back to life?”
Their gazes met. Phoenyx never looked away, instead remembering her first moment of meeting Captain Jack. “What do you need me to do, Phoe?”
“I need you to give up living forever.” Phoenyx said, ignoring Owen’s protest. “In turn, I will give a portion of myself up to accomplish the future and give Owen life.”
“Jack’s not part of this!” Owen interrupted. “I’ll pay my own damn price.”
Phoenyx shook her head slowly.”This price is high, Owen. It’s a price to be shared by those who can.”
1. Jack looked at Owen. “I’m willing to take that risk. What about you, Owen?”
Owen shook his head. “You’ve got to be who you are, Jack. This is my life, my price.” He turned to Phoenyx who said nothing, her arms down at her sides. “I want life, but not at the cost of anyone else.”
Phoenyx sighed. “You have energy that animates you, Owen. I need to bring life back to your body. Jack can’t die. I am always reborn knowing who I am and who I was. Our energy combined can bring you life. But alone, I can’t do it completely.”
“Then don’t.” Jack’s voice was clipped, annoyance clear in his tone.
Phoenyx smiled softly, half-heartedly. “But I can heal Owen on my own. Just at my cost.” She held out one hand towards Owen. “I might not be able to bring you back fully, but I can give you some measure of peace and life. If I give myself up, then I can bring you full life. Agreed?”
Owen nodded. “I’m not fully understanding giving yourself up, but something is better than nothing.”
Jack’s hands pulled them apart. “No, I won’t allow it, Phoe. I will not.”
“You can’t disallow it either, Jack.” Phoenyx stepped away from him. “My choice, just as you made yours.” Taking Owen’s face between her hands, she opened herself to the power of the elements and the powers in the Rift. Tapping them, she began weaving a dance of life, energy and more. With a last glance at Jack, Phoenyx whispered, “My cost, Jack. We shall meet again– just not in this lifetime of mine.”
1. She felt the shift of energies as she began healing a portion of the energy infused cells. This wasn’t something she normally did. In fact, the only way she knew it was possible was because of her constant rebirth. Phoenyx continued to focus her will and attention to the needs of Owen’s body, restoring the need to breathe, eat, take a piss, have sex. She anchored his soul into his body.
She should’ve expected it, but she thought he’d know better. “Jack get away from me,” she whispered as she felt Jack’s fingers interlace with hers over Owen’s face.
“No, take from me. If you can do what the Doctor couldn’t–”
“He could’ve and he would’ve. But you asked him not to.”
1. Phoenyx felt Jack’s mind wrap around hers. “Gods woman you’re going to die to allow him to live fully?”
“Can you think of a better way to serve those who protect those unaware?” She pushed more of her energy into Owen, feeling the sluggish beat of his heart. If only she could push a bit more…but somwhow, Jack blocked her.
“I won’t lose you too. I can’t, You know what it’s like to be like me. Phoe, don’t you dare die and leave me and Torchwood bereft. I know you want to live.” His voice was so soft, so seductive. Should she not die? The price Owen would pay would start—
Owen screamed at the top of his lungs as pain filled his soul and the brightness of Phoenyx’s powers chased the darkness away. Then there was something else. Something eternal- Jack.
Two pairs of lips kissed Owen’s mouth. Two sets of hands stroking him while soft reassuring words seeped into his subconscious and conscious mind.
“Shh, this is the price, Owen. Your soul is filled with the darkness of death and bringing in the light hurts.” Phoenyx whispered softly while stroking his cheek. “Live for me, Owen. Live and help those unable to help themselves. Be the hero you know you can be.”
“Don’t let Phoe press too hard Owen,” Jack whispered. “She’s willing to die to bring you to life.”
Owen opened his eyes and gazed deeply into Phoenyx’s green ones. “You’re dying?”
“Not yet, but once I give you this last bit, I shall die and be sent into renewal, Owen. Don’t fear, It’s a neverending forever thing.”
Owen grabbed Jack’s hand. “No, she can’t. Don’t let her, Jack. She has to live too.”
“Then fight, man! She needs us to break the link for her.”
Together the two men joined their energies and severed the connection between the three, shoving Phoenyx back with just enough energy to live, though wounded. Owen faced Jack in this astral plane and hugged him tightly. “Thanks Jack.”
“No, thank you. You’re not quite alive, but you’re more than you were, Owen. Use it wisely. Live for the moment and don’t hide.” Jack kissed Owen lightly on the lips. “You’re a good man and I won’t lose you just yet.”
Both men let go and floated back into consciousness, where Owen awoke with a scream. “WHAT THE HELL!!”
He and Jack looked to where Phoenyx laid on the floor, unconscious. Jack reached her side first and scooped her into his arms. “I’m taking her to my room. If you’re up to it, get your bag and help me figure out how to make her better, Owen.”
“Damn straight, Be there in a couple of minutes,” Owen responded, getting back onto his feet shakily. “I feel Jack. I can feel and gods, Jack– I’ve got to take a piss.”
Jack flashed him a smile. “Go piss and get back to help me.” He looked down at the blonde in his arms. She was too pale, her breathing too shallow. Were they too late? “I can’t lose her. Not after discovering that she knows more about the Doctor.”
